Apple introduces MacBook Air

During his Macworld Expo keynote address on Tuesday morning, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air, a computer that the company billed as the world's thinnest notebook -- small enough to fit inside an interoffice mailing envelope. It's priced starting at $1,799 and will be available within two weeks.

Sporting a silvery finish, the MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display that has a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The backlighting saves power and provides "instant on" response from the moment you turn it on, according to Jobs. The device has a slightly wedge-shaped profile. It weighs about 3 pounds, and sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches. It's 12.8 inches wide and 8.95 inches deep.

The MacBook Air also features a built-in iSight webcam and a full sized MacBook-style black keyboard. The keyboard is backlit, similar to MacBook Pros, and has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness. The trackpad is also capable of recognizing multi-touch gestures, similar to using an iPhone or iPod touch. As a result, the MacBook Air's trackpad is disproportionately large, compared to the size of trackpads found on the MacBook or MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Air features a 1.8-inch hard disk drive with 80GB of storage capacity standard. A 64GB solid-state disk (SSD) drive is an option. The hard drive is a Parallel ATA (PATA) model that operates at 4200 RPM.

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo chip running at 1.6GHz, with 1.8GHz available as an option. Jobs noted that Intel was willing to engineer a new version of the Core 2 Duo specifically to Apple's specifications -- it's 60 percent smaller than others. The chip operates with 4MB of on-chip shared L2 cache running at full processor speed, and uses an 800MHz frontside bus. 2GB of 667MH DDR2 SDRAM is also included.

Like the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air features a slimmed down MagSafe connector for power. It comes with a 45 watt power adapter. A flip-down door on one side reveals USB 2.0, Micro-DVI (to connect an external display) and a headphone jack. The MacBook Air also includes 802.11n-based wireless networking support and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

Apple estimates that with wireless networking turned on, the MacBook Air can get about 5 hours of battery life.

No internal optical drive is included, but Apple will offer a $99 USB 2.0-based add-on SuperDrive for users who need it. For users that opt not to get the optical drive, Apple is offering a new software feature on this machine called Remote Disk; it enables you to "borrow" the optical drive of another Mac or PC on the same network as the MacBook Air, to use for installing software, for example.

Apple's frequently been in the crosshairs of environmental group Greenpeace in recent years. Jobs offered information about the environmental goals behind the MacBook Air -- it has a fully recyclable aluminum case, and is "the first" to have a mercury-free display with arsenic-free glass. All the circuit boards are BFR-free and PVC-free, and the retail packaging uses 56 percent less material than the MacBook packaging.

Share Partitions Between Linux and Windows

Disclaimer: This document is provided "as is" without warranty. Use at your own risk. In no event shall I be liable for any damage resulting from the use of this work.

So you have Linux and Windows installed on the same machine. What is the best way to access and transfer files between the OSs? That is, how do you make the same filesystems and files accessible when you are running either OS?

There are some considerations to note:

Linux supports Windows types of partitions (e.g. FAT, FAT32, etc), but
Windows does not recognize Linux types of partitions (e.g. ext2, ext3, etc)
A common solution is to mount the Windows partitions (e.g. C:) in Linux. However, this can be very dangerous. You could inadvertently damage critical system files for Windows while logged into Linux. If you mount the Windows partitions read-only, then access only works in one direction; you can see Windows partitions in Linux, but you have no way of transferring files from Linux to Windows.

In my opinion, sharing key partitions or filesystems is not a clean solution. The OSs should know as little as possible about each other. With the dual-boot setup I use, Windows only knows about Linux to the extent that I made a 1-line edit to C:\boot.ini and copied a 512-byte GRUB boot loader file to C:\. Other than that, Windows can't see any of the Linux partitions and Linux can't see the C: partition.

Recommended Solution
I recommend creating a separate partition that is accessible to both Windows and Linux. I'll refer to this as a "share" partition. It must be of type FAT32 (same as vfat) or FAT to be accessible and writable by both OSs (NTFS is not yet an option as Linux does not support writing to NTFS partitions). To make the share partition visible and writable by both OSs, do the following:

Create a FAT32 partition that you want to be visible by both OSs. I don't explain how to do that here. I believe you can create the FAT32 partition in Windows using Start->Run->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Disk Management. Many Linux installation programs (e.g. Red Hat) allow you to create FAT32 partitions during the installation process.
For Windows, you don't have to do anything to make the FAT32 partition accessible. The OS will automatically detect it and assign it a drive letter (e.g. E:)
For Linux, do the following steps to make the FAT32 partition accessible:
Create the directory that serves as the mount point (e.g. mkdir /osshare). The mount point is the location in the filesystem where you want this FAT32 partition to appear.
Put an entry in the /etc/fstab file for the share partition. Be very careful in editing this file, as it's used at system startup! For an example, check out the /osshare entry in my /etc/fstab file. The umask option determines the permissions for all filesystems on the partition.
Upon your next reboot into Linux, the share partition should get mounted automatically. If you wish to mount the FAT32 partition immediately, use the mount command, e.g.: mount /osshare
Once you've set up your share partition, you can use it for transferring files between the OSs. For example, I found this invaluable for downloading RPMs while logged into Windows before I managed to get the Winmodem working for Linux.

Things to keep in mind for your share partition:

It's of type FAT32, so Linux functionality such as symbolic links won't work on it

Linux Bluetooth hackers hijack car audio

Linux hackers have demonstrated a way to inject or record audio signals from passing cars running insecure Bluetooth hands-free units. The Trifinite group showed how hackers could eavesdrop on passing motorists using a directional antenna and a Linux Laptop running a tool it has developed called Car Whisperer.

The software was demonstrated during a Bluetooth Security talk at last week's What the Hack hacker festival in The Netherlands. Trifinite has developed a specialism in unearthing Bluetooth security shortcomings, the latest of which illustrates implementation problems rather than more deep-seated security concerns with the protocol. Car Whisperer only works because many car manufacturers use standard Bluetooth passkeys such as "0000" or "1234" which are easy to guess. "This is often is the only authentication that is needed to connect," according to Trifinite.

Once connected hackers can interact with other drivers or even eavesdrop conversations from inside other cars by accessing the microphone. And that's just for starters.

"Since the attacker's laptop is fully trusted once it has a valid link key, the laptop could be used in order to access all the services offered on the hands-free unit. Often, phone books are stored in these units. I am quite certain that there will be more issues with the security of these systems due to the use of standard pass keys

Building a computer controlled radio transmitter

How would you like to send text messages to your friends without wires, and without an Internet connection, and without paying monthly fees?
In this project we will build a very simple radio transmitter that you attach to a serial port on your computer. The computer then runs a free program that converts words you type into radio signals that are decoded by another computer, using a cheap radio receiver, and a sound card.
With a little study, you don't even need the second computer, since the radio signals are in Morse code, which anyone can learn to decode in their head with a little practice. It also comes in handy as a secret language, or as a way to send long distance messages with a pocket mirror.

The computer controlled transmitter needs these parts: (We carry most of the necessary parts in our catalog.)

  • A one megahertz oscillator You can use other frequencies if you have a radio that can receive them. We carry this item in our catalog.

  • A serial port connector We use a 9 pin RS232 connector. You can take apart an old serial cable, or buy a new connector from an electronics or computer store. We carry this item in our catalog.

  • Some insulated wire for an antenna Just about any kind of wire will do, the longer the better.

  • An alligator test lead This is a piece of wire with alligator clips at each end. We carry this item in our catalog.

For our first transmitter, we will connect the parts with alligator clips. This lets us quickly change frequencies by replacing the 1 megahertz oscillator with an oscillator with a different frequency. Later we will show a version made with a socket for the oscillator, a printed circuit board, and a light emitting diode that flashes morse code along with the oscillator.

The first step is to cut the test lead in half. In these photos I have cut two test leads, one red and one black, to make it easier to see where the connections go. But unless you are making two transmitters (your friend wants to send messages back, doesn't she?) you can just use one test lead (cut into two pieces).

Remove a little insulation from the cut ends of the wire, and solder one of the cut ends to pin 5 and the other to pin 4.

Pin 5 of the serial port connector (the black wire in the photo) connects to the ground pin of the oscillator. Pin 4 of the serial port connector goes to the power pin of the oscillator. The drawing shows the transmitter from the top (pins pointing down). The photo below shows the oscillator upside down, with the pins facing up.

The green alligator clip attaches to the antenna, which can be any long wire. It is attached to the output pin of the oscillator. The remaining pin of the oscillator (the one nearest the sharp corner) is not used.

Your Computer Controlled Transmitter is now complete!

Controlling the transmitter

To send a message, we now need a computer program that can convert

what we type into Morse code, and turn the oscillator on and off in the short and long pulses (dots and dashes) that are required.

A program to do that (for the Windows operating system) can be downloaded by clicking here. Save the ZIP file on your computer, use a ZIP file decompressor to unpack it, and then double-click on the resulting MorseCode.exe to start running it.

Once the program is running, you will see a window like the one above. Type something in the window (such as "Hello there!") and then select the Transmit item in the Radio menu. Your transmitter is now sending your message.

To receive the message, it helps to also select the Repeat Message menu item (as we did in the screen shot shown above). This will make the transmitter

send the message over and over again, so we can more easily hunt for the signal on an AM radio dial.

We want to tune the AM radio to 1,000 kilohertz. If your radio has a numeric tuning indicator, this is easy. If the radio only has a dial with a few numbers on it, you will have to hunt around, tuning it until you hear clear morse code coming from the speaker. It helps at this point to have the AM radio close to the transmitter's antenna.

You can select how fast the message is sent by using the Speed menu.

You can control which serial port to use through the Com Port menu.

The Radio menu has three selections we have not discussed yet. The AM Low Tone selection sets the tone you hear in the AM radio to 500 hertz. The AM High Tone selection sets the tone to 1,000 hertz. The CW selection is only for short-wave radios that have an SSB or CW mode. This selection does not modulate the radio signal, so an AM radio will just hear clicks. This selection allows the signal to be heard farther away, but requires a more expensive short-wave receiver. I have used the Grundig YB 400PE radio with great success. It usually sells for about $150.00.

If you are a computer programmer, and would like to look at the source code for this program, you can download it here. There is also a much simpler, command-line version of the program here.

Receiving the code with a computer

Until you have learned to decipher Morse code in your head, you will want to have a computer do it for you.

There are many free programs floating around the Web that will do this for you. One such program can be downloaded here. I won't go into its operation (since I didn't write it), but it has a Help menu, and it is fairly straightforward to use. You will need an audio cable to connect the radio's earphone jack to the computer's sound card input jack, but that is all the hardware required.

You can see it working in the screen shot above, decoding our endless loop of "hello there".

How does it do that?

Most of the important concepts for this project have been covered in other sections of this chapter.

The computer provides power to the oscillator through the DTR pin of the serial port. The program turns the DTR signal on and off, which causes the oscillator to turn on and off in return.

To make the signal audible in a cheap AM radio, the computer turns the power to the oscillator on and off 1,000 times per second while sending the dots and dashes of the code, and leaves it off in between the dots or dashes. This modulates the radio signal at a frequency your ears can hear. In AM Low Tone the audio frequency is 500 times per second.

In the CW mode (CW stands for Continuous Wave), the computer does not modulate the radio signal. It just turns on the oscillator long enough for the dot or dash to be sent. In this case, the receiver does the work of converting the signal into an audible tone your ears can hear, by using a circuit called a beat frequency oscillator. Your short-wave radio may have a switch labelled BFO, or SSB, or CW that allows this circuit to operate.

Some nicer packaging

The computer program turns on DTR and also another signal called RTS, while sending the dots and dashes. In the version of the transmitter shown below, we have mounted a 14 pin socket to a general purpose circuit board from Radio Shack, and plugged the oscillator into that. A blue light emitting diode is connected to the RTS pin of the serial port connector (pin 7). The LED flashes Morse code along with the oscillator, making an eye-catching project.

The serial port connector is wedged onto the printed circuit board by placing the board between the pins.

The wires that connect the serial port connector to the oscillator and the LED also serve to hold the connector onto the printed circuit board.

The antenna in this case is a 6 inch long wire. In CW mode, this wire is all that is needed to receive the signal anywhere in the house. A longer antenna will allow the whole block to receive the signal.

By replacing the 1 megahertz oscillator with a 28.322 megahertz oscillator, and connecting the transmitter to a large amateur radio antenna (10 meter beam), I was able to send signals from California to Texas. To do that, you will want to get an amateur radio license.

Learning Morse Code

There are many free programs for helping you learn to decipher morse code in your head. Some of them are: cw_play, MorseMad, NuMorse, and MorseCat.

USB Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon install

name="GENERATOR" content="OpenOffice.org 2.3 (Linux)">

USB Ubuntu 7.10 install from Linux: This tutorial enables you to install, boot and run Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) from a USB flash drive. In addition to installing Ubuntu to a USB device and then booting Ubuntu from the memory stick, this tutorial will enable you to automatically save your changes and settings back to the thumb drive and further restore them on each boot using a second "casper-rw" persistent partition. The tutorial was written for those already familiar with working from Ubuntu or another Linux desktop environment. If you do not have access to or prefer not to use a Windows computer, this Ubuntu Linux on a stick tutorial is for you.

Ubuntu 7.10 takes slightly longer to boot than previous releases. However, once it's up and running, it performs much better than running from the Live CD.

USB Ubuntu 7.10 Essentials:

6. Insert the CD and your USB flash drive

7. Reboot your computer into Ubuntu from the Live CD

8. Open a terminal window and type sudo su

9. Type fdisk -l to list available drives/partitions. Note which device is your flash drive (example: /dev/sda) Throughout this tutorial, replace x with your flash drive letter. For example, if your flash drive is sdb, replace x with b.

10. Type umount /dev/sdx1

11. Type fdisk /dev/sdx

1. type p to show the existing partition and d to delete it

2. type p again to show any remaining partitions (if partitions exist, repeat the previous step)

3. type n to make a new partition

4. type p for primary partition

5. type 1 to make this the first partition

6. hit enter to use the default 1st cylinder

7. type +750M to set the partition size

8. type a to make this partition active

9. type 1 to select partition 1

10. type t to change the partition filesystem

11. type 6 to select the fat16 file system

12. type n to make another new partition

13. type p for primary partition

14. type 2 to make this the second partition

15. hit enter to use the default cylinder

16. hit enter again to use the default last cylinder

17. type w to write the new partition table

12. Type umount /dev/sdx1 to ensure the 1st partition is unmounted

14. Type umount /dev/sdx2 just to ensure the 2nd partition is unmounted

15. Type mkfs.ext2 -b 4096 -L casper-rw /dev/sdx2 to format the second partition

16. Remove and Re-insert your flash drive

17. Back at the terminal, type apt-get update

18. Type apt-get install syslinux mtools

19. Type syslinux -sf /dev/sdx1

20. Type cd /cdrom

21. Type cp -rf casper disctree dists install pics pool preseed .disk isolinux/* md5sum.txt README.diskdefines ubuntu.ico casper/vmlinuz casper/initrd.gz /media/ubuntu710/

Ignore any "cannot create symbolic link" errors

22. Type cd /home/ubuntu

23. Type wget pendrivelinux.com/downloads/U710fix.zip

24. Type unzip -o -d /media/ubuntu710/ U710fix.zip

25. Restart your computer, set your BIOS or Boot menu to boot from the USB device and reboot again.

You should now have a USB Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon flash drive that should automatically save your changes, restoring them on boot.

Note: If your having trouble getting Ubuntu to boot, your memory stick may have a corrupted MBR. To repair the MBR of your USB device, at the terminal type sudo apt-get install lilo then type lilo -M /dev/sdx (replacing x with the letter of your flash device)
